As I continue on with my Miyazaki marathon, I finally made my way to Castle in the Sky, the first film put out by Studio Ghibli. I was pretty neutral on my opinions on this movie because I hadn’t heard much about it, but it blew my mind. This movie was great and is very high on my list of good reviews, even for a Miyazaki movie. I was drawn into the story right away and the characters were awesome. I definitely understand why Studio Ghibli was able to continue their work after putting out a movie like this one. Continue reading

As I march on with my Miyazaki movie project I am becoming more and more pleased with the movies I get to watch. My last review was of Nausicaä and I was a bit disappointed with the movie. My experience with Princess Mononoke couldn’t be more different. This movie was absolutely wonderful and really met my expectations for a Miyazaki movie. The movie was wonderfully done and I was completely absorbed. I hold Miyazaki movies to a high standard (the basis is Spirited Away which was the first Miyazaki movie I ever saw. I think that movie is absolutely perfect) and I am pleased to say that Princess Mononoke met my expectations. Read on for more thoughts! Continue reading
I have been watching a lot of Studio Ghibli films lately as part of the Miyazaki movie project assigned by my enthusiastic roommate. I have really liked this films ever since I watched Spirited Away, a beautiful masterpiece that I am glad was my first movie of Miyazaki’s. I have since then watched Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howl’s Moving Castle. I have also seen Whisper of the Heart, although this movie is not Miyazaki himself. After gaining more experience into Miyazaki’s movies, I decided to tackle his very first, and in many ways his most famous movie, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I enjoyed this movie very much, undoubtedly because it is simply a Miyazaki movie. Regardless, I had many opinions, both negative and positive about this movie. Read on for more! Continue reading
I read the novel Howl’s Moving Castle a couple of months ago, and I had been dying to see the movie ever since then. I finally got around to it, and I wasn’t disappointed! Miyazaki never disappoints me and he brought his typical beauty to this film. I was left with a happy feeling after watching and I was really glad I finally got around to watching the movie. I was very hesitant to see this Nicholas Sparks movie, because although I like The Notebook it makes me cry so much. I do not enjoy seeing movies that will make me cry because I do not like crying. I love a good show that will make me tear up and show emotion of course, but if a movie makes me bawl, I don’t like to see it again (same goes for Titanic and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith). This movie was actually quite different from my expectations and I actually really enjoyed it. I saw it at first because one of my friends loved Zac Efron, and I was expecting everyone to die in the end, but things were quite a bit better than that. Continue reading
I have to admit that I haven’t seen most of the Naruto movies because they do not factor into the overall plot, but I did see the last Shippuden movie, and decided to go ahead and watch Blood Prison last Friday. I have to say that I really enjoyed it and thought the plot was very good. It was very refreshing to watch because Naruto is currently in fillers again and won’t be new again until next week. I would recommend this movie to any Naruto fan. Continue reading
I am a huge fan of the Hunger Games book series and I was extremely pumped up for the movie. I attended the midnight premiere in Boston and was 100% satisfied. There aren’t enough words for me to describe how good this movie was. I loved every minute of it and hope to see it several more times, despite the ridiculous movie prices at my local theatre (10 dollars a movie guys? Really?). This movie has so many good qualities that I’ll probably miss some, but I’ll do my best to go over the most important parts. Continue reading
My roommate and I watch a movie every Friday for bonding time, and while we usually watch movies we’ve both seen and love, this week she got to choose the movie and it was “Whisper of the Heart” which I have never seen before. This movie was really good and I had a great time watching it. It is definitely a worthy addition to my animated movies, and movies in general. Continue reading
I recently went to see the movie version of The Lorax, a classic Dr. Suess story. I read this story many times and was deeply affected by it. There is something about seeing a gray landscape barren of trees from which a small creature flees due to the hopelessness of the situation.
The movie was fairly accurate to the book, though there were a few extra plot lines such as the story of the boy who is told the story of the Lorax and tries to return trees to the land. I really enjoyed this movie, especially because I wasn’t aware that there were extremely entertaining musical numbers in it. The story is very sad because the storyteller, the Onceler, cuts down all the trees and ends up making the natural creatures of the land have to leave. At this point the Lorax leaves because he could not stop the Onceler and save the trees. All the Lorax leaves is a circle of stones on which is engraved the world “unless”. This is where the book leaves off, but the movie is much happier. In the movie the boy takes the seed of the last tree and plants it, at the same time restarting the entire forest.
This movie actually made me cry (children’s movies often do that to me) because of all the horrible things that happened to the environment because of man’s selfishness. The movie has clear environmental and anti-big business sentiments, but I don’t really see a problem with this. I don’t think there is anything wrong with children learning to preserve what resources we have and learning not to stomp over everything and everyone to get what they want.
I highly recommend this movie for adults and children alike because it has a really good message. I would give it a 4/5 because I really enjoyed it.
